The City
Gothenburg is a fast-growing city focused on collaboration, innovation and sustainability. As one of the most popular destinations in the Nordics, the city has been named number one in the Global Destination Sustainability Index seven years in a row.
The beating heart of the city’s hospitality industry is the Event District, that runs from the public transport hub Korsvägen to the legendary outdoor arena Ullevi. This is the site for one of the largest city development projects since Gothenburg was founded in 1621 – the new Arena Quarter.
The Vision
In 2022, the City resolved to replace the Scandinavium arena with two multi-purpose venues, integrated with residential spaces, hotels, and public walkways to create a dynamic urban landscape that fosters vibrant city life. In other words, the project will not only have an impact on the city skyline, it will also affect how its inhabitants and visitors move, experience and interact with the city center and each other. Here, Gothenburg meets the world and vice versa.
The Assignment
– A multi-purpose arena for world championships and international events with a capacity for 16,000–18,000 visitors.
– A multi-purpose arena with a capacity for 3,000–5,000 visitors.
– Commercial and public spaces in a dynamic event quarter.
– The project’s gross area is approximately 150,000 sq m.
– Preliminary start of construction 2028.

Teams should also be prepared to maintain an active presence in Gothenburg throughout the project.
The Client
The developer for the Arena Quarter is the municipal property company Higab, which owns and manages many of the buildings that are characteristic of the city and house important activities for a vibrant Gothenburg. The development takes place in collaboration with companies and administrations within the City of Gothenburg.
